“As far as I’m concerned, things can’t go fast enough,” says Esther Croes of the Trimbos knowledge institute in the NOS Radio 1 Journaal. “October 1 as a perspective, I think is still a long term. I’m glad that measures are being taken, but as far as I’m concerned, that could go a bit faster.”

Origin

The e-cigarette was once developed because it would be less harmful than tobacco smoke. “It was once developed by a Chinese pharmacist, who wanted people to be able to get nicotine without all the tar products that are released during combustion. All reasons to get rid of it and not use it.”

“Over time, the product has developed further into what is very attractive to young people. Flavors such as hazelnut paste, dragon vape, watermelon breeze, all flavors that are not for die-hard smokers. They don’t say: well, hey, thanks to the bubblegum flavor I can stop smoking. This has really been further developed towards young people.” Young people often do not think about smoking when they use the product. “They make the comparison with clean air. Then it still contains carcinogenic substances, it contains harmful substances for the lungs. There are indications that it is bad for the heart. The nicotine in particular is very harmful to the developing brain of young people. very bad.”

There are also indications that young people actually start smoking cigarettes after e-cigarettes, says Croes. “Even young people who are not that curious, with parents who set strict rules, with all kinds of characteristics that are protective for tobacco smoking. The fact that the flavors now disappear will help to prevent this. “It is one of the most attractive things for young people to start using it. Everything that hints at flavors and appeal to young people must also be removed. It is also advertised on the packages with attractive names. It will increase the attractiveness among young people “There are other ways to get there, which is why there will also be an online sales ban. Ultimately, I wouldn’t be surprised if the tobacco industry finds a way around the flavor ban.”
